GLOSSARY KODI

4K

4K UHD (2160p) a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 lines (8.3 megapixels, aspect ratio 16:9) and is one of the two resolutions of ultra high definition television targeted towards consumer television, the other being 8K UHD which is 7680 pixels × 4320 lines (33.2 megapixels).

ADDONS

Add-ons are extensions that can be run from inside the Kodi GUI. They are usually written by third party developers and published to a repository.

Aspect Ratio

The aspect ratio refers to the proportions of the height and width of an image. It defines its overall shape, and it is usually shown as W:H

(W is the width and H is the height).

The most common aspect ratio today is 16:9, which means that if the width is divided into 16 equal parts, the height of the TV or picture should be 9 parts.

BACKUP

A backup of your setp (aka build) is very important, if for some reason kodi crashes you will not need to start from scratch, your backup can also be put onto other devices

BUILD (AKA SETUP)

A build is a collection of repos (repositories) add-ons and programs usually combined with a skin, there are many pre-made builds out there (usually over bloated and poorly maintained), we recommend making your own build, it may sound daunting to new users but it really is easy, we will show you how every step of the way, in the process of doing so you will learn how to maintain your build and you will not have to rely on others to do it, as in many cases they fail to do so properly

 CODEC

A codec encodes a data stream or a signal for transmission and storage, possibly in encrypted form, and the decoder function reverses the encoding for playback or editing. Codecs are used in videoconferencing, streaming media, and video editing applications.

 Debug Log

A debug log can record database operations, system processes, and errors that occur when executing  programs or running unit tests.

Developer (aka DEV)

Is a person who writes the code for various add-ons, a good example is Lambda who created genesis and exodus back in the early days of kodi

We cannot thank the devs enough, without them kodi would be nothing, the amount of time they put into coding and maintenance can easily add up to thousands of hours of their free time

File Manager

A file manager or file browser is a computer program that provides a user interface to manage files and folders installed on your device.

 FORKS

Forks are often created whenever a different group or organization needs to make customizations to the kodi program.

Some examples are SPMC, CEMC and MYGICA

GUI

Graphical user interface, this usually refers to the skin being used in kodi or a kodi fork

HDMI

High-Definition Multimedia Interface is a proprietary audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data from an HDMI-compliant source device, such as a display controller, to a compatible computer monitor, video projector, digital television, or digital audio device

IPTV

Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the delivery of television content over Internet Protocol (IP) networks.

This is in contrast to delivery through traditional terrestrial, satellite, and cable television formats. Unlike downloaded media, IPTV offers the ability to stream the source media continuously.

As a result, a client media player can begin playing the content (such as a TV channel) almost immediately. This is known as streaming media.

Kodi (formerly XBMC)

Is a free and open-source media player software application developed by the XBMC Foundation

LIBRARY

Kodi has two main libraries video and music, the video library, video management, scanning content in, playing video content off the internet, and more

The Music section of Kodi consists of a powerful and feature rich library that allows the flexible sorting and organization of your music collection

Metadata

Additional information for Movies, TV Shows, Music Videos and Music, that will be added to the library and displayed with the media.

It can include Taglines, Plots, Actors/Artists, Release/Premiered dates, Alternate Titles, Song Lyrics, Labels/Studio Ratings and much more. It can also include Artwork.

REPOSITORY (AKA REPOS)

A repository can hold within it, video add-ons, music add-ons, program add-ons, skins and various tweaks, a good example of this is the kodi repository

SKIN

The skin is the first thing you see when you open kodi

The default skin is called Confluence in kodi 16.1 and under, and the default skin on kodi 17 and above is called Estuary

The skin helps you navigate around kodi easily such as video add-ons, program add-ons and settings

URL

The definition of URL is “Uniform Resource Locator, internet address”, that just means in the kodi world usually a website address you type into file manager

WIZARD

A wizard can install a build for you, this is not recommended as mentioned above, wizards can also be used to install add-ons and repositories and auto maintenance tools

ZIP FILES

Are single files that contain one or more compressed files, they are used for many different things, but mostly the devs will use them to send out updates to various add-ons
